The Spargo family, Antonio on fiddle, Annika on fiddle, Thomas on guitar, and Carolyn on accordion and sometimes fiddle, started performing Swedish folk music together in 1999 while living just out of Luck, WI, after coming home from living in Northern Sweden. They played for the Amery Swedish club, coffee shops for Italian sodas and tips, various nursing homes, and different events in the USA and in Sweden.
The name Värsk is the gårdnamn (farm name) of Carolyn's father, Ragnar Johansson, where he grew up in Western Dalarna. Spelmän are folk musicians, thus Värsk Spelmän became our name.
A CD was made by Värsk in the early 2000's of tunes made by the family members. Three of the tunes can be found on the ASI Spelmanslag's last CD: Minnen av Sunnansjö, Finska Mormor Emma Schottis, Emilias Visa. Carolyn had joined the ASI Spelmanslag in 1987 as a fiddler. Annika was the director of the ASI Lilla Spelmanslag for several years and took them to Sweden.
Värsk Spelmän continues to perform, today. Because availability of the family members are not always possible, we have Frances Olson and Julie Anderson in our group.
Craig and Bonnie Stockel will also lead us in playing KUBB from 1-3pm- the Nordic Lawn toss game
